TallSky Consulting is supporting the Cowichan Women Against Violence Society (CWAVS) in their search for a People and Culture Director to join the senior leadership team in Duncan, BC. This is a meaningful and impactful opportunity to support the people who make this work possible, with a 32-hour work week typically structured over four days, with some flexibility to meet operational needs.

CWAVS works from a feminist, anti-oppressive, and decolonizing perspective to support women, children, and individuals impacted by violence and abuse. Grounded in safety, dignity, and connection, the organization is committed to fostering a workplace where staff feel respected, supported, and able to show up in their work.

The People and Culture Director plays a key leadership role in shaping that environment, stewarding people and culture practices across the organization. Working alongside leaders and teams, this role supports both day-to-day and more complex situations with a thoughtful, relational approach, that balances structure, care, and accountability. The organization is actively engaged in its Cedar Blankets Indigenization initiative and is committed to cultural and psychological safety for all employees.

In this role, the People and Culture Director will:

  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention practices in ways that are welcoming, consistent, and aligned with CWAVS values
  • Work alongside leaders to navigate employee relations, performance development, and team dynamics with care and clarity
  • Oversee compensation, benefits, and people-related practices with a focus on fairness and transparency
  • Promote employee wellness, including return-to-work planning and supportive workplace practices
  • Support alignment with legislation and internal policies, with an emphasis on understanding and practical application
  • Contribute to a culture grounded in equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive and decolonizing practices
  • Participate as a management representative on the Joint Health and Safety Committee

Our Ideal Candidate Brings:

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • 3+ years of progressive HR experience, ideally in a not-for-profit, social services, or values-driven environment, with leadership responsibilities
  • CPHR designation or candidacy is an asset
  • Working knowledge of applicable legislation (e.g., BC Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Workers’ Compensation Act, FOIPPA)
  • Experience leading people practices grounded in feminist, anti-oppressive, and decolonizing values

Additional requirements include:

  • Satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check in accordance with CWAVS policies and funder requirements.
