The Research and Development Scientist will support several advanced research and development programs and is the primary interface between the “science” and the engineering

Reporting to the Bio Services Manager, the Research and Development Scientist will support several advanced research and development programs and is the primary interface between the “science” and the engineering, with Bio Services Technicians reporting to you directly. This is a one-year term position with the potential of moving to a permanent full-time position upon completion of the contract.

  • Support project teams through assistance and handling of infectious samples in a CL2 (BSL2) environment in BSL2 laboratory work
  • Hands-on work with planned lab experiments, executing them with meticulous attention to detail
  • Write development and validation reports and SOPs
  • Material research and familiarity with a variety of materials including plastics, biochemistries, and biological interactions
  • Biomedical research and familiarity with general microbiology, biochemistry, and physiology
  • Identify capable suppliers and vendors to purchase and expedite the delivery of key biological components or reagents
  • Work with manufacturing personnel to develop assembly procedures for mechanical, electrical, and biochemical assemblies related to biological considerations
  • Work within a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) environment
  • Practice clear documentation techniques
  • Analyze and summarize data
  • Assist with laboratory related report writing, protocol generation and SOP development
  • Troubleshooting Assay problems
  • Work collaboratively in cross-functional teams comprised of individuals from various disciplines
  • Train, mentor and supervise Bio Services Technicians

Our ideal candidate brings:

  • Bachelor or Masters, or PhD in Engineering, Applied Science or Science
  • 3-5 years technical experience in one or more of the core practice areas (microfluidics, microbiology, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering)
  • A good knowledge of biochemistry, physiology, basic microbiology/cell culture laboratory skills is required
  • Experience working with analytical instruments
  • Demonstrated meticulous laboratory bench work
  • Familiarity with integration and automation of assay chemistries by instrumentation and robotics
  • Excellent understanding of the working principles of molecular diagnostic assays and hands on experience in PCR, with prior experience working in molecular clean bench
  • Prior experience working with multidisciplinary teams (including assay, microfluidics, hardware, electronics, and software teams an asset)
  • Experience with Product Development in a Quality Management System environment is an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of product development processes, preferably in biologics, regulatory pathways for medical devices and biologics (e.g. FDA, EMA), and knowledge of GLP and GMP an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and in a multi-site/multicultural organization where effective multi-tasking and both intra and cross-program communication is essential for efficient mission accomplishment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
