We have a new and exciting opportunity for dedicated and culturally aware individual to take on the role of Marine Guardian at the Kwiakah Centre of Excellence in the traditional territory of the Kwiakah First Nation in Phillips Arm, B.C.

What is the role of the Marine Guardian:

As a Marine Guardian, you will work collaboratively within a team whose focus will be on marine conservation, stewardship and the well-being and protection of the protected marine territory of the nation. Responsibilities will include increasing the Kwiakah First Nation (KFN) presences in the land and on the shores, conducting surveys, research, monitoring and collecting data on the ecological health within the territory.

Our ideal Marine Guardian candidate brings:

  • High School diploma with 3 years of general work experience required
  • Post-secondary training and or equivalent work experience in Marine/Forestry camp environment an asset
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certificate and vessel operator experience is required
  • Driver’s Abstract required
  • Radio Operator Certificate is required
  • First Aid certification and wilderness training are advantageous
  • Knowledge of Kwiakah First Nation territory and values
  • Familiarity with indigenous laws as well as federal and provincial rules and regulations
  • Proficient computer skills, including Word, Excel, email and using handheld devices

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting the health of the KFN territory and culture
  • Ability to work irregular work hours, including overnight and in isolated conditions

Additional Requirements:

  • This position requires working extensively in isolated conditions within the territory, including in forest, marine and lake environments
  • Proficiency in outdoor environments with the necessary first aid and safety training to keep yourself and others safe on the job
  • Applicants must be physically fit to carry out the duties
